A strange thing happens when we scroll through social media long enough.
We can go from being perfectly content with our lives to wondering whether we have somehow failed.
Someone else has the marriage we wanted. Someone else has the career we wanted.
Someone else has the house, the vacation, the body, the confidence, the life we imagined for ourselves.
We are no longer living our lives; we are measuring our lives against everyone else’s.
Maybe we feel as though we missed the boat. Maybe we wonder whether we should have accomplished more, earned more, started the business, taken the chance.
Maybe we carry the fear that we have not been enough and never will be. So we begin searching for proof of our worth in all the wrong places.
We look for it in our bank accounts. Our career titles. Our resumes. Our appearance. Our relationships. The car we drive. Our zip code.
The Impossible Standard
We look to the world to tell us who we are. The problem is that, by the world’s standards, we will never be enough. There will always be someone with more money, more beauty, more influence, more talent. The world offers endless competition and goalposts that never stop moving.
Social media amplifies the problem. We see highlight reels and measure them against our behind-the-scenes realities. We leave convinced that someone else has the life we should have, and we must chase it.
The result? We believe that worth is something to be earned through performance. We forget that our worth is inherent to our identity.
What God Says
I wrestle with this myself, and I suspect I am not alone. Lately I have found myself returning to a simple truth.
God already settled the question of our worth.
Long before we succeeded or failed. Long before anyone chose us or overlooked us. Even when we feel small. Even when life does not make sense.
1. God created you with purpose.
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)
You are not an accident. God has prepared a path uniquely your own.
2. Your value is intrinsic.
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people.” (1 Peter 2:9)
Your worth is not determined by your income, your relationship status, your body, or your productivity. It comes from God.
3. God is still writing your story.
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6)
Many of us live with a sense that we are running out of time. God is not finished. The chapter you are living now is not the end of the book.
4. God sees you when you feel forgotten.
“I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands.” (Isaiah 49:15–16)
You remain known by Him, precious in His sight and the apple of His eye.
5. God loves you beyond measure.
“Because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ.” (Ephesians 2:4–5)
His love is not something we earn. It is grace, freely given and underserved.
The End of Striving
The world tells us to spend our lives proving our worth. The Gospel tells us we are already worthy.
The world says, “Prove yourself.” Jesus says, “You are loved.”
If you are weary from striving, be encouraged. God can redeem every mistake, detour, disappointment, and heartbreak. As Romans 8:28 reminds us, He works all things together for the good of those who love Him.
You do not need to earn your worth. It was given to you long ago.
Never forget who you are: you are God’s workmanship.
You are seen. You are remembered. You are a child of the King.
